Why Fragments of Self Could Be One of This Year’s Most Thought-Provoking Fringe Shows (Plus 50% Off for GGC!)

If you’re heading through to Edinburgh this Fringe and you’re looking for a show that will make you laugh, think, reflect and perhaps even see yourself a little differently, then let us introduce you to Fragments of Self.

We recently caught up with the brilliant women behind the production during a Facebook Live, and after hearing the passion, honesty and heart behind this project, we couldn’t wait to share it with the GGC community.

An exclusive offer for the GGC community

Before we dive in, here’s something special…

If you buy your ticket in person at Greenside @ George Street on the day of the performance and quote the code GGC, you’ll receive 50% off your ticket.

(Please note: the offer is only available when purchasing at the venue on the day and isn’t valid for online bookings.)

More than a play – it’s a collection of women’s stories

At first glance, Fragments of Self is a collection of monologues connected by short scenes. But as writer Lyndsay Lomax explained during our interview, the production was created in a very unusual way.

Rather than writing in isolation, Lyndsay invited the actresses to share their own lived experiences. Those conversations became the inspiration behind many of the stories audiences will see on stage, creating something deeply personal while remaining universally relatable.

As she put it, the experiences are personal to the women involved, but they’re also experiences “people can really relate to.”

A show created by women, about women… for everyone

Director Courtney Beamish describes the production as offering audiences “a window into a different aspect of life, of being a woman in today’s world.”

Rather than telling one single story, Fragments of Self explores the many different identities women carry and the experiences that shape them.

One of the most powerful moments from our conversation came when Courtney explained why the show feels so relevant right now.

Although more women are talking openly than ever before, many still experience isolation. Her hope is that audience members will recognise parts of themselves in the stories, while also gaining a deeper understanding of experiences different from their own.

Don’t expect 50 minutes of tears…Writer Lyndsay describes herself as “predominantly more of a comedy writer” and explained that she deliberately uses humour to explore more difficult themes.

“I like to disarm people with comedy before delivering the wow moment,” she told us.

It sounds like audiences can expect laughter, honesty and those moments that stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre.

Why this show stands out at the Fringe

With literally thousands of performances taking place throughout August, we asked the team why Fragments of Self deserves a place on your Fringe itinerary.

The answers all came back to one thing: authenticity.

The cast spoke about how personal many of the stories are, how intimate the production feels, and how refreshing it is to present something real in a world where so much of life feels filtered through social media.

Courtney also shared something that makes this production even more special:

Because it was created specifically for this Fringe, this is the only place and the only time audiences will be able to experience this version of the show.

The message they hope you’ll leave with

We finished our interview by asking each of the women one final question: How do you hope audiences feel when they leave?

Their answers were beautifully simple.

Have the confidence to be yourself.

Feel less alone.

Be a little more fearless about embracing your imperfections.

Those are messages we can certainly get behind here at Glasglow Girls Club.
