Meet the Member – Lesley Canis, Scottish Women’s Wellbeing Summit

Name, business name

Lesley Canis, Scottish Women’s Wellbeing Summit

Tell us about your businesses, the inspiration behind it and when you launched it?

I launched the summit in March this year. I wanted to run women’s events that would spark and facilitate change. I have been thinking about it for such a long time. I had been thinking about it for such a long time. Then one day I was talking to someone about how we teach women shame from a young age. It’s so inherently ingrained into our DNA. Sit down, close your legs, be a good girl, don’t be too noisy. A woman is bossy, a man is authoritative. A man is confident, a woman’s full of herself. Etc, same characteristics just a different gender. Then I’d read a study in the European Institute of Gender Studies Journal that stated that women who earn more than their “worth as a woman” because on a deep and subconscious level even if their husbands don’t care the women feel ashamed of it. I remember thinking HOW DO WE CHANGE THAT!!!! And so the summit was born.

Best piece of advice you were given at the start of your business journey?

Embrace my own story.

What has been your biggest lesson/ challenge faced so far and how did you overcome it?

Don’t get caught up in how you think things should be. There’s always another way. Just keep putting one step in front of the other and let yourself rest.

What is your number 1 business tip for success?

I’ll let you know when I’ve finished the summit but I think so far it’s just to take the risk and do the scary thing.

What are the big business goals for the next year?

I’m just starting with this Summit.

How can the GGC Business membership help?

Grow awareness around my event and network with women who may be potential delegates, exhibitors or sponsors

What’s the dream?

Pull this off!
