Kirsteen Mackay – KM Tax Returns Ltd

Tell us about your businesses, the inspiration behind it and when you launched it?

I started my business back in 2010 when I was only 22 just doing bookkeeping and tax returns for family and friends. I offer bookkeeping, tax returns, VAT returns, micro company accounts, business plans. I think when I started I never thought I would be where I am today I just done it for extra cash as I was heading to Oz for 3 weeks.
Best piece of advice you were given at the start of your business journey?
Not advice I was given at the start but something recently when I decided to pack in the full time job and become a full time business owner – don’t under sell yourself. I think this is something I have done a lot.
What has been your biggest lesson/ challenge faced so far and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge has been since returning to my full time job in January 2023 from a year off on maternity was continuing to run my business along side a full time job and also juggle mum life and also still having a bit of myself. I have always been able to have a full time job and a side hustle because it was something I was so passionate about but the question was being asked what do I want to do more as my body was struggling to do both. One night I woke up sick and felt totally run down I was lying listening to a podcast and something just clicked it has said stop focusing on what is the worst that could happen and focus on the best that could happen and that was it for me the next day I went into work and handed in my notice. My business was something I have had for 13 years and I wasn’t about to give that all up for the fear of not having a steady income each month and getting paid holiday pay. It was now time to put all my eggs in one basket and finally have a better work life balance.
What is your number 1 business tip for success?
Drive and determination if you believe in yourself you will make your own dreams come true you can’t just sit there and expect it all to come to you.
What are the big business goals?
2023 has been about sitting up as a limited company and taking the business to the next level now that I will have more spare time I am able to take on more clients and build from there.
How can the GGC Business membership help?
The GGC business membership has helped me to do this I joined in May and the amount of new business I have had is amazing being able to advertise to such a large group of people. I also hope now I will be able to start attending networking events and getting more involved.
What’s the dream?
The dream is to make this a success and support myself and my family financially I don’t want to be sitting in a years time wishing I hadn’t left my full time job I want to be wishing I had done it sooner.
