Many of you will know Heather through GLOW, where she has been a member since the very beginning. Over the years, she has delivered sessions, shared her knowledge, supported other members and, in true Heather fashion, probably given a few people the honest business advice they needed but were politely avoiding.
Laura also played a very special part in the book, writing the foreword, reading an early version as a beta reader and supporting Heather throughout the process as both a friend and fellow business owner.
So, to celebrate the launch, we thought we would share a short Q&A between Laura and Heather about the book, the message behind it and why it matters for business owners.
Laura: Heather, first of all, how does it feel to finally have The Growth Compass out in the world?
Heather: Honestly? Surreal. Exciting. Slightly terrifying. I have talked about writing a book for years, so to finally have it available on Amazon feels like a massive moment. The book brings together so much of what I talk about in Growth Roadmaps, workshops and conversations with business owners. It is practical, honest and hopefully the kind of book people can actually use, not just read once and stick on a shelf. I even tried to be amusing – but it is a business book, so I can’t promise anything!
Laura: You start the book by focusing on the person behind the business. Why was that so important?
Heather: Because most growth plans fail when they ignore the human being who has to actually do the work. You can have the fanciest marketing plan in the world, but if it does not fit your strengths, capacity, confidence or real life, it will probably fall apart quickly – and that is devastating to see. The Growth Compass starts with you, because your business needs to grow in a way that makes sense for you. I really can’t stress that enough!
Laura: As someone who read the early version, what stood out to me was how accessible it felt. Was that intentional?
Heather: Completely. I did not want to write a book full of jargon or make people feel like they need a business degree and a silent retreat to work out their next step. I wanted it to feel clear, useful and honest. Business growth can feel overwhelming, but a lot of the time what people need is space to think, the right questions and a structure that helps them make better decisions.
Laura: Who did you write The Growth Compass for?
Heather: I wrote it for all small business owners and anyone who knows they want to grow but feels a bit stuck, scattered or unsure what to focus on next. It is for the person with loads of ideas but no clear plan. The person who is tired of copying what everyone else is doing. The person who wants their business to grow, but not at the cost of their sanity. I think we all need a does of the Compass now and then as a reminder.
Laura: What would you love people to take away from it?
Heather: That growth does not have to look the same for everyone. You do not need to do everything. You do not need to be everywhere. You do not need to dance on TikTok unless you genuinely want to. You need to understand where you are, where you want to go and what route actually fits you. That is what the book helps people work through at their own pace. It is a series of workshops!
